four years ago, david, enormous expectations for president obama, and there were a lot of people, hope and change was big. this time, call it pragmatic hope as far as the public is concerned. as you see here, just less than 30% believe they're going to evaluate president obama with a clean fresh slate. 64% will evaluate him based on past feelings. and here, a continuation of a trend we saw throughout the first term. very much similar frankly to what ronald reagan tell with in his first four years. personally, the public really likes president obama. 74%. but his policies, again, more people disapprove of the policies. 49%, than approve of them there, at 47%. so what about the next four years? sort of a mixed optimism, if you will. i go back to the idea of pragmatic hope. 43% optimistic. 35% pessimistic. 22% kind of mixed. and staying with the theme of word clouds, david, we asked folks to send a message to president obama. what would they like to say for his second term? and as you can see here, look at the most popular phrases. a lot of them have to do with the economy. fix the econom

so it is kind of obama's fault. of course, the simpler explanation is not that obama planned all this. but the reason they have been taking moderate positions they have taken for years now, those just may be the positions. if the republican party can't agree to them or come up with popular ideas of their own, the problem may be within the republican party, not at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. barack obama is the president of the united states. he is a very powerful man, responsible for many things. but he is not why most republicans have taken a pledge, saying they will never raise a dollar in taxes no matter what the budget deficit looks like. he is not why they decided to put the whole u.s. economy at risk if they don't get their way on spending cuts. he is not why the white house partnered with gun legislation, no matter how small, is tantamount to taking away guns, he is not why extreme movements like extreme ideas like going back to a gold standard in the middle of an economic crisis have taken root on the right. t

he's got to say to the american people what the president obama legacy may well be in years to come. and for that, you need to have a vision. i'm not sure most people in america are fully clear what that vision is. because we can't keep being a slightly negative, well, you know, things have been really bad, we're trying to make them a bit better. it's going to be a little more oomph about it, positivity and grand vision. >> i would go back to the famous caesar chavez line, yes, we can, and really inject a lot of optimism in this inaugural. the burden on the president is that in 2008, it was electric here in washington. a million people coming, our first african-american president. this time around, it's a little more humdrum. we're exhausted from the 2012 presidential election. newtown has all of us in a tizzy and angry. we've got the, you know, problems going on with fiscal cliff and a new debt crisis. so the mood is not great. the way to change it is a big, bold speech. i personally would like to see the president vote gun control, which i know you've been so helpfully outspoken on
